Most surfaces will expand and contract over time, but due to the rigidity of tiles, there needs to be space in between to allow for this movement. Grout is then applied in between each of the tiles, providing a neater aesthetic and preventing water and dirt from filling the gap. Most grout will be water-resistant, but when applying tiles in areas with wetter conditions, such as the bathroom, opting for a waterproof grout or sealing means you can ensure that the grout is stain and mould resistant. In areas with a great amount of movement, a flexible grout may be recommended in comparison to a standard type of grout, so it’s worth considering the characteristics of the material you’ll be laying your tiles on. From white to black, the wide range of colours will mean that you can either match your grout to your tiles or create a contrast in the interior by daring for completely different tones of grout and tiles. It’s also worth bearing in mind that the smaller your tiles, the more grout you’ll likely use.
